Deep in the heart of Texas

My friends and I went there in '96 and thought we'd be able to nail it. Back then it was $50- returnable if the meal was completed. Being poor Australian backpackers at the time I opted not to do the challenge. The steak was hefty and looked do-able and being hungry stoner backpackers back then we charged up before going in thinking we'd be able to beat it for sure. (The have a display case showing what the meal looks like). However despite the extreme munchies and general hunger I realised the large spud and breadroll and other sides would be the killer.

Instead I wisely spent my money on a largeish $25 regular steak that was cooked to perfection and a mixed sampling entree platter that had American Buffalo, Rabbit, Rattlesnake and calves fry (mountain oysters aka cow testicles). A whole heap of meats I'd never eaten before!!

You know when you order a steak med rare etc and in your mind you establish exactly what amount of cooking is required. Ultimately the steak is left 20 seconds more on the grill and although still med rare and good still isn't how you imagined it......well this was the first (but thankfully not last) time in a steakhouse that it came out PERFECTLY matching my vivid steakeating imagination.

The calves fry were ok..a little bland but super soft, almost pate/foi gras in texture.
The rattlesnake could have been good but was extremely (sharp)bony and overcooked so ended up super rubbery. Would have been nice filleted and cooked quickly like calamari.

The buffalo was tasty too. Thoroughly recommend this fine institution on your travels.
